Sailing Club
Nha Trang, Vietnam

As with golf and travel - song, dance and drink are essential parts of a lavish and relaxing lifestyle.   With many sophisticated nightclubs and lounges throughout SE Asia, there is certainly a perfect match for your mood and occasion.

In this month’s issue, we profile two beach clubs well known for their delectable delights, signature cocktails and relaxing early evening atmosphere.  Additionally, the Sailing Club in Nha Trang and the Bliss Beach Club in Phuket are both well known as premier nightlife destinations serving up the hottest beats served up in provocative, classy beach-front settings.

Sailing Club
Nha Trang, Vietnam

Located beneath majestic palm trees on Nha Trang’s sun-drenched main boulevard resides the Sailing Club, one of the largest entertainment complexes in Southeast Asia.

Established in 1994 by its Australian owner, the Sailing Club has grown through the past two decades into what it is today, Vietnam's premier entertainment venue.  The club stands proud as an internationally famed beach bar, restaurant and mega club.

In the 18 years since opening, the Sailing Club has been regularly upgraded, including a recent major renovation. The current rendition is a beautiful combination of Mediterranean style and Asian charm, situated on the best piece of beach side real estate that Nha Trang has to offer.

Part of the unique charm of the Sailing Club is its ability to transform itself depending on the hour of the day.  From sun-up until sun-down it is the perfect beach venue, available for all to enjoy.  In the evenings it rivets with its extraordinary atmosphere coupled with top international cuisine.

For those looking for a place to while away a few hours whilst soaking up an amazing beach and island view then look no further. A delectable signature cocktail or delicious snack is only a wave of the hand away.

Providing both style and substance, its a place where one loses track of time as day blends into night.  As the sun disappears behind Nha Trang's beautiful hills, the Sailing Club transforms into a sophisticated dining setting serving eclectic food from four different international kitchens. Whatever your taste may be, the Sailing Club likely has the dish for you!

And just when you thought it was time to go home, this fashionable venue once again reinvents itself … as restaurant becomes bar and nightclub.  Every night of the year, the Sailing Club offers the best dance floor with the latest tunes on offer in any city.

Weekends bring out the best at this iconic club, as every Thursday, Friday & Saturday in summer the Sailing Club hosts its mega beach parties.  On Saturdays in the winter, the club features international bands & DJs, fire shows, dance shows, stunt shows etc, with full sound & lighting production with stage & dance floor on the beach.

The club boasts 5 bars including the ICE bar on the beach, 2 dance floors holding 600 people, and the club itself which can accommodate 3000 party goers.   Well known around the world, the Sailing Club’s bands and DJs have included Sean Doyle and hundreds more who have entertained from the club’s stage.

This festive period the Sailing Club has an 8 day music festival starting Monday 24th Dec Xmas eve, and finishing 31st Dec, NYE.  This year (2012), the parties will be bigger and more spectacular than ever before, with a midnight firework display set off from the barge floating in front of Sailing Club. The club is pre selling tickets for NYE thru a number of sources, so book early to avoid disappointment.

The club’s clientele changes depending on the time of day, morning is a mix of tourist & locals, lunch is a mix of tourist, locals & expat residents, and dinner is filled with mostly tourists.  After 10pm however, the venue moves into club mode and this is when they get a huge number of Vietnamese, who make up more than 70% of the guests.  In short, you can say the club’s guests come from every country & background in the world.

Bliss Beach Club
Phuket, Thailand

Though a newcomer to the Phuket clubbing scene, the Bliss Beach Club has successfully blended it’s pristine beach location with a cosmopolitan ambiance and exquisite décor, offering an abundance of fun and frivolity.  Whether it’s a casual afternoon cocktail in the daytime sun, or in the golden hued sunset, Bliss Beach Club is an experience unmatched in Thailand.

Set beneath swaying casuarinas trees along 160 metres of the Bang Tao Beach, the Bliss Beach Club provides a serene location away from the maddening crowd.  General Manager Giuseppe “Pepe” Viva mentions that the club fit out, by Stem Design of Bangkok, offers a unique, completely different, multi-functional experience for all ages within a beautifully landscaped and designed space: “You come to this place, for pure Bliss.”

The club’s innovative grass amphitheater, unique stairway entrance and unparalleled views across the Andaman Sea to nearby Coconut Island help set a relaxing daytime atmosphere. This daytime calm typically gives way to pulsating rhythms mixed by leading international DJs.

The sophistication of Bliss is how they seamlessly transform from a casual beach restaurant during the day to a lounge and hot dance club at night.  Bangkok designer Nat Sundarabhaga, of STEM Design, has contrasted aged wood, deep leather seats and vintage lamps against the black and white, ultra modern, expansive bar with its reclaimed, teak top.   Promoted as “vintage meets exotic. Classic, yet simple, modern, iconic and playful.”

Bliss is where sophisticates gather to share and mix with visiting entertainers and artists during their island visits.  Its certainly a place to be seen.  The club recently celebrated it’s first year anniversary with big blow-out bash on the 24th of November featuring DJ Mark Doyle (Fierce Angels) as well as DJs from around Thailand.

Perhaps the biggest names behind the decks were Boy George and Marc Vedo who performed on the 5th of October.  Quite a feat for a club in their first year.

Thước Đo Golf Bán Lẻ - Golf Retailing Metrics

from Vietnam Golf Magazine

February 2013

Retail math is often used by golf shop managers to analyze sales figures, inventory purchasing plans, and how to apply markup & markdown pricing.  Though it may appear the club has guests steadily flowing into the shop, and that employees are busy engaging with customers, the golf manager must still question how well the retail business is really doing.  A successful golf manager should be reviewing their sales reports on a regular basis to stay up-to-date with how the retail operations are performing.

A few of the key metrics for retailers include:

Gross Margin – the difference between the sale price and item cost.  It represents how much of a price premium the shop is able to get from customers as well as how cheaply it can purchase inventory from it’s suppliers.

Though gross margin does not include expenses such as rent , utilities or salaries it does reflect the profit window that is available.   It allows under-performing retailers to expand their potential profit by diversifying away from low margin categories into higher margin categories.

Markup - reflects the difference between the purchase cost and the original retail price.  Industry staticians indicate golf equipment typically receives a 20-30% markup, while apparel receives at least a 50-55% markup.  Some accessory items may receive a considerably higher markup.

Markdown - reflects the reduction in retail price required for sale when customers are not paying the original retail price.  Successful golf retailers recommend a 90-day markdown policy.  Items not sold within 90 days of receipt should be marked down to clear the items from stock.  This clears retail space for more profitable items.

Markdowns should be recorded throughout the year tracked on a spreadsheet for each vendor.  Vendors whose items require high markdowns should be replaced with more profitable vendors in future seasons.

Cost of Sales Percentage – in order to maximize profit margins, cost of goods sold should be analyzed regularly.  This is represented as: the cost the goods sold ÷ by total sales.   Golf shops that carry apparel as a higher percentage of their inventory will achieve a better cost of sales due to better margins on apparel items.

Inventory Turnover – demonstrates how fast the shop is selling the goods. It is calculated as:  Total Sales for the year ÷ by Average Inventory.

A high inventory turnover suggests a brisk business, providing lowers holding costs along with robust sales.  Some suggest that inventory turnover helps to separate great retailers from the not so great. Those who can sell their goods quickly have a big advantage over those that can't.

Stock-to-Sales Ratio - reveals how long the level of inventory on hand will last if sales remain constant.  Statistics indicate an unfortunate number of golf shops carry two to three times more inventory than they need to.  Successful golf managers recommend a shop’s retail  inventory should equal no more than what will be sold through the next three months.

Repeat Customers – a high repeat customer count shows that your customers like what the golf shop provides and that they keep coming back for more.  This can be reflected as either a percentage of total sales from repeat customers or a percentage of total customers that return to purchase more.

Dollars Per Round - analyzes the relationship between golf shop sales and the number of golfers who play your course   This is represented as:  Sales Revenue ÷  Rounds Played.   The resulting figure is a representation of the guest’s desire to purchase available golf shop inventory.  A growing number indicates an increasing preference for newly offered inventory.

Merchandise Planning

Merchandise planning is a vital component for a successful retail shop, requiring accurate sales forecasting by classification (such as shirts, shorts, headwear, irons and balls) for each season.  Historical data and the metrics outlined above will assist in determining appropriate inventory levels and deliveries by vendor and classification for each month.

Printed records of a vendor’s performance will provide key data on the amount of beginning inventory required for each season.  These purchase levels should be adequate to cover anticipated sales and inventory turnover for approximately 90 days.  Ending inventory should be low  enough to prevent excessive markdowns during the final weeks of the season.

Inventory Control

Another vital component of a profitable golf retail operation is inventory control, which involves bringing in the right amount of inventory at just the right time.   Profitable golf shops understand how to avoid overbuying, incorrect buying, late deliveries and other situations leading to excessive inventory.

What should be done if the shop’s inventory level is too high?

  • Aging inventory loses its value quickly.   Identify and clear out seasonal merchandise and anything over a year old through a holiday sale or discounts to club staff.
  • Clean out the stock room.  Return damaged items to the supplier for a refund or credit.
  • Review outstanding purchase orders.  Are the the items still required when they’re scheduled to arrive?  Is it possible to delay shipment to a more appropriate time?

How often should the club take a physical count of the shop’s merchandise?

Successful golf managers recommend a physical inventory be taken monthly or quarterly.  Timing depends on the accuracy of the shop’s computerized inventory systems.  High value products should be inventoried more frequently to prevent loss.  Occasional, unannounced inventory counts should also be made when traffic is slow.

How can the golf manager be prepared for the sales call?

  • Utilize and review accurate, computerized sales figures from the previous year.   Of particular value is the sell through ratio, which compares the amount of inventory received from a supplier against what is actually sold to the consumer.   The equation:  Sell-Through Percentage = Units Sold  ÷ Units Received

  • Make use of the supplier’s value-added services such as discounts, co-op advertising, signage, etc.

  • Make note of past issues with the suppliers, such as late shipments and back orders.  Work with the supplier to ensure the issues are resolved for the coming year.
Retail management is a valuable, yet often overlooked function at golf shops in Vietnam and around the world.    Accurate, historical data on sales, inventory purchases, markups and markdowns will allow the golf shop manager to increase profitability through better sales management.
